Four Numbers That Explain Bitcoin’s Record Week

Bitcoin’s move toward $80,000 can be read through four numbers. Together they show a rally supported by spot investment but accelerated by forced trading, with sentiment already approaching an overheated level.

$14,264: the largest weekly dollar gain

Bitcoin closed the week ending August 23 at $77,387 after adding $14,264. The 22.7% rise was the largest dollar-denominated weekly gain in the cryptocurrency’s history, according to The Block.

The size of the increase matters because it changed the market from one of hesitation to one of momentum. Bitcoin also outperformed gold, lifting the bitcoin-to-gold ratio to 16.73 ounces per coin, its highest point since May.

$3 billion: the cost of betting against the move

CoinDesk reported that roughly $3 billion of short positions were squeezed as bitcoin accelerated. Short sellers borrow or use derivatives to benefit from falling prices; when the market rises sharply, they must buy to limit losses or face automatic liquidation.

Those forced purchases amplify a rally. They can carry the price through resistance quickly, but their contribution is temporary. Once the bearish positions have been closed, continued gains require new buyers rather than traders covering old bets.

$1.92 billion: the spot ETF counterweight

US spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds attracted $1.92 billion in net inflows during the trading week ending August 21. SoSoValue data cited by The Block showed that it was their strongest week since October 2025.

This is the number that gives the rally a firmer foundation. ETF inflows represent investment demand entering regulated spot products. They do not eliminate volatility, but they suggest the rise was not created solely by leverage in futures and perpetual swaps.

78: optimism reaches the edge of extreme greed

The Crypto Fear & Greed Index climbed to 78, the highest since December 2024. The reading sits close to the “extreme greed” range and captures how quickly psychology changed after the Treasury’s decision to expand long-dated bond buybacks helped improve liquidity conditions.

Strong sentiment can draw additional capital into a trend. It can also encourage late buyers to use excessive leverage, making funding rates and open interest important measures of whether the market is becoming unstable.

What the four numbers do not answer

Analysts cited by The Block said spot volume, ETF flows, derivatives funding and open interest should be watched together. A rally led by spot demand can absorb profit-taking more effectively. A rally dominated by leverage can reverse sharply when prices stop rising.

Bitcoin is now testing the $80,000 area, but the round number is less informative than the composition of demand. The weekly gain proves that buyers took control. The short squeeze explains the speed. ETF flows show outside capital participating. Sentiment at 78 is the reminder that confidence can become crowding.

The next durable signal will come from whether ETF inflows persist after forced short covering fades. If they do, the record week may mark a broader repricing. If leverage replaces spot buying, the same numbers that made the rally spectacular will also explain its vulnerability.
